Activates X10 receivers when motion is detected

Top Positive Review

I gave it only 4 stars because this is my second purchase in 4 years. The first one deteriorated in the outdoor sunlight. But I did have it since 2015.

You have to keep your wits about you to program it, as it involves how many pushes of a button you make an how many times a light blinks.

It does its job as advertised, however. I have it controlling my outdoor porch lighting. It connects to the radio unit inside the house which sends the X10 signal through the wiring to the X10 light switch. I used heavy double sticky tape to mount it on the outside wall. The batteries have lasted over a year.

Top Critical Review

First off, my unit came with scratches to the front…used and returned? I am using this with a XPS4 quiet relay switch which controls 3 CFL porch lights that come on with the same single switch. I also have the TM751 so they can talk to each other. I have this eye programmed for darkness only, so anyone walking up to the porch will set off the switch and activate the porch lights. The design of this thing is idiotic. You can only mount it flat onto a surface with these tiny little screws with the holes behind the batteries. This unit needs an articulating mount that will allow this module to swivel so it can be mounted at a right angle or so it can look down a porch or hallway. Flat mounting it on a wall leaves little options. The detection is also kind of weak and inconsistent. It seems to like to kick on with an object 3 feet in front of it, but only 2 or 3 out of 5 times. I can’t mount it anywhere inconspicious and still have it work. I have the sensor duct-taped to a pot about waist level, so anyone walking up to the door should set it off. About 10 years ago I bought a 2 peice motion detector and light switch system from another company that was flawless, everything this should be but without the additional transmitter (TM751). This system does not even meet minimum expectations and I just wasted $70+ trying to make what should be a simple process work. Maybe as part of a larger system X10 works, but the motion sensor for me is a dud.

Customer Questions & Answers

What is the angular field of detection? I’m looking for a detector that has a sharp focus (narrow field of detection).
Answer: These detectors are best at detecting motion across their field of view. The field of view is about 60 degrees from side to side and about 30 degree up and down. The range is less than 20 feet. They are not good for detecting head on movement.

Will this sensor work with Insteon devices?
Answer: Insteon devices are backward compatible with X10, provided you properly program the Insteon device with the X10 house/unit code you will be using.

What is the recommended mounting height?
Answer: This would depend on what activity you wanted to detect. The vertical field of view is about 30 degrees; 15 degrees up and 15 degrees down. So if you wanted to detect people walking 10 feet or more distant from the PIR, you would need to mount it no higher than about 7 feet of the ground.

Is the pro version (pms04) worth the premium price over this ms16a? i don’t see any differences?
Answer:

I can’t find pms04 on the X10 website. However, the pms03 on that website seems to lack the the thin rubber gasket of the ms16a to keep moisture out if using outdoors. The ms16a has a more logical procedure to perform settings than the less expensive models I have owned. I recommend that you download and read the instr??

I have the ms 14a set to turn on lights only when dark out. it keeps turning them on in daylight. how can i stop this?
Answer: Mine quit working and I got a new one but couldn??t get it programmed, even with the help of a handyman. They are very difficult to program and the directions are impossible.
