JIS8 Waterproof Level – Uniden MHS75 VHF Hand Held Radio won’t give up no matter how wet it gets. Whitecap splash, gusty spray, tidal wave, whatever, this radio can take it. The Uniden MHS75 2-way Marine Radio is built rugged to take the rigors of being out on the water, day in and day out with a full JIS8 waterproof rating. It also features a floating design, and is submersible for up to 30 minutes at five feet.

I bought this to replace an older floating model Uniden I bought a few years ago that decided to stop working. I purchased it on 9/21 and took it down to the dock. As I was climbing into my Zodiac, the clip popped off my belt and it went to the bottom, sinking immediately in about 10′ of water. The water in Narragansett Bay is opaque that time of the year, so I considered it lost. Fast forward to 11/14 and I am getting some things I left behind at the dock. It was dead low tide. I look down at the now clear water and see the radio. I zip tied a fishing net to a boat hook and was able to reach down and scoop it up. To my amazement, it still had a charge, and more amazingly, it even transmitted and recieved! After letting it dry out a bit, it wouldn’t change channels and I considered it toast. After letting it dry our for a week, it fired up and works perfectly. I still havent charged it since 9/21. Will it fail in the future due to this? Who knows, but the fact that it lived in 10′ of salt water for almost two months is pretty amazing.

Top Critical Review

First, I will say that this radio did work fairly well, when it was working. The audio was clear and the range was good. The screen was bright and the battery life was good.

However, there are quite a few design flaws. First is the battery clip. Our clip broke within one month of owning the radio (fixed with a zip tie around the whole radio). Ours wasn’t the only one with this problem, as we have met at least one other cruiser with the exact same issue (became a joke around the table that night).

Second, is the “submersible” feature. By submersible, they mean you could drop it in a puddle 2 inches deep and if you immediately pull it back out, it will be fine. However, anything deeper than that and it will not survive. Ours died after a quick dip from the dock. Friends of ours died after just sitting in the dinghy in a rain shower (yes in the water at the bottom of the dinghy about 2 inches deep).

Third, is the terrible belt clip. There is no retaining mechanism for the clip (it simply rotates and falls off). I must have picked the clip off the ground 20 times, before I finally lost it.

I would have sent it back as we didn’t even get 2 months of use out of it, but it just too much hassle from down here in the Caribbean.

Spend more money and buy a better radio. Our last handheld was a Standard Horizon and it lasted us 3 years. I thought I would try a Uniden to see how it compares. Sigh, I will now be replacing it with a Standard Horizon HX150
