Top Positive Review

I’ve been a fan of Shantae ever since Risky’s Revenge came out for the DSi, and I’ve played every game since (including the original). What really got me into the series was the quirky dialogue, tight controls, great level design, and the whole “metroidvania” style of gameplay. As somebody who grew up playing a lot of 2D Metroid games (i.e. Metroid Fusion, Super Metroid, Zero Mission), I love the whole metroidvania style of games.

I missed this game when it was a Kickstarter project (which still kinda sucks), but when I first learnt about this game, I was really hoping that it would return to its metroidvania roots. Instead, I got a game that has “world hubs” and short levels.

Don’t get me wrong, this game is still very fun and the visuals/music are stellar, but I was really hoping for more metroidvania-style gameplay. Also, this game has too many transformations, in my opinion. In the original Shantae, animal transformations were used primarily as a means to puzzle-solving in dungeons (oh yeah, 1/2 Genie Hero doesn’t have dungeons), but the amount of transformations you need to do in this game gets rather tiresome after a while.

There is also a lot of backtracking, which is typically okay for me in a metroidvania-style game (like Axiom Verge), but it gets rather boring in this game, due to the world “hubs.”

Now that I have all the gripes out of my system, I can talk more about the positives. Like I said earlier, it’s a very fun game with amazing visuals/music. This game has the same Shantae “feel” of the other games. If you’ve played the other games, you’ll like 1/2 Genie Hero. The addition of the music track CD is a nice touch. All in all, I think it’s worth the cash. If it were $60, I wouldn’t be so sure.

TL;DR – 1/2 Genie Hero, while a very beautiful and fun game, falls a little short when it came to my own subjective expectations. The amount of transformations and backtracking gets a little tedious and tiresome, but it’s not a deal-breaker. If you already like Shantae, or platformers in general, you’ll like this game.

Customer Questions & Answers

Is the ps vita version in italian too? (the digital of my country version is it)
Answer: In my Physical copy of this game i did not see any language options at all, just sound options. I have the North American cart though. I believe PSVita carts are not region locked and rely on the Region selected in the PSVita System settings to determine the Language for the most part.

Does this include friends to the end DLC?
Answer: I have no idea about the Wii version, nut the VITA version was bought before the DLC, so I have to check if it’s a free DLC or not. I’m pretty sure it’s not, though.

Is this just for one player?
Answer: Yes, it’s a one-player game, no online.

Will this work on an european wii u ?
Answer: No. Wii U games are region locked unfortunately.
