pros: new mute button, no more burning thru AA batteries, personalizable buttons 1 and 2, lighter weight, the first review i saw was a guy who said the remote always listens but thats not true they have an off switch i circled it in my picture and also a note roku said on their device
cons: so far right out of the box i already noticed a problem the charger port is NOT usb c type its still micro usb which would have been fine in 2014 but in 2021 when all new android phones are ubc c that is unexcusable, also minor nitpick they changed the preset buttons on the bottom of the remote, i have sling, paramount + (aka cbs all access) both of which 2 of 3 have been replaced one by vudu which im pretty sure is less popular than paramount plus wish they would have left them all blank so you can pre-program them

I’ve been an avid Roku user, and I’m currently on my third remote in as many years. I was thrilled to receive this new remote that is rechargeable and does not require any batteries. I have also been looking forward to the new headphone feature since I live in a small apartment. Overall, the remote itself appears to look fine and nearly identical to the previous version that came without the headphone jack. However, I was very upset to learn during the setup process that the voice command is preset to ON straight out of the box.

Unless you know about this preset, the remote will start collecting data from your home without your knowledge. The setup guide shows you the location of the voice command button only towards the end of the setup process and directly says that the remote is “collecting data” when the button shows green. I was shocked to see my button showing green and immediately clicked it off. Why wasn’t the voice command preset to OFF? I felt this was very intrusive and creepy of Roku to collect data without consent, and I am beginning to doubt if I will ever purchase another Roku device again.

If you don’t want Roku collecting your data, turn off the voice command before turning on the device.

Can you connect a portable speaker to remote instead of head phones?
Answer: Yes but it drains the battery. Most modern TV’s have 3.5 mm audio out on the back, I’d use that instead. If you’re getting interference, I recommend buying a ground loop isolator

When will it be available again on the roku website?
Answer: It’ll be back… you can bank on that.

Is the rechargeable battery removable?
Answer: Hello, no the recharable battery is designed to stay in the remote. You will only need to plug the remote in using the micro-USB cord provided. This allows the remote to be in use while it’s charging!
