Double your movies on the road with two 7″ TFT LCD DVD players lets the passengers indulge in enjoying their own DVD Movies, music and photos

Top Positive Review

We bought the Philips Dual DVD players for a family road trip based on other reviewers’ comments, and I must say we have been very pleased with this purchase. The 7″ screens are plenty big for the kids to watch their favorite shows and screen glare does not seem to be an issue. We have had them for 2 months and use them on a daily basis. They fit easily over the front seat headrests and plug into the power outlet.

PROS: Clarity of image and sound, DVDs have not skipped over bumpy roads, program returns exactly where it left off when the ignition was turned off, both players can accommodate headsets, and each DVD can be connected together to allow the same show to be displayed OR it can play 2 different DVDs for each child in the back – this is a great feature especially if you have a big gap in age with the kids (or if Mom/Dad want to watch their show in the back seat!). You can also remove one of the players and use an AC adaptor to play it inside the house.

CONS: You have to make sure the DVDs are set totally flat in the player or they won’t play, the manual control buttons take some time to get used to (but even a 7 y.o. can figure them out), there is no external remote control for the parents in the front seat to control the program/volume, there is no battery back up for the players in case you want to bring it inside a restaurant or store for the kids.

We have been so pleased with these players that we opted not to get the DVD entertainment package on our new vehicle and just use these instead. The kids love them, they were much cheaper than the entertainment package, and they get to watch different DVDs at the same time. We’ll see how long they last!

Top Critical Review

These DVD players work wonders for long car trips with our granddaughter. She gets restless quick strapped into her car seat (can’t blame her) but taking her out of the seat while on the move is not an option. Her Grandma (also sitting in the back) used to try and entertain her with book reading and toys, but she bored of those distractions quickly. Amazingly, she’ll sing along with a DVD for hours, watching a favored movie over and over (drives me crazy in the driver’s seat, but I just remind myself to “keep on truckin’, soldier, it’s the big picture that counts”). About the players…they worked perfectly out of the box. We can use one in each car, or one in the wife’s car (which we use most frequently) and one in the house at the kitchen table (when no educational children’s shows are on the tube). The independence of the two players is a great feature! Setup was easy as long as I read the instruction carefully. One feature that does NOT work for me…when watching the DVD player thru the TV (another great feature), I’m supposed to be able to turn off the player’s screen (as an energy saver) by pressing the “AV MODE” button on the top right of the player, leaving only the TV screen on for viewing. Well, the player’s screen turns off as advertised, “TV MODE (PAL)” flashes across the TV’s screen momentarily and the TV screen starts scrolling up (non-stop) at high speed in black and white (not good). When I hit the player’s “AV MODE” button again, “DUAL SCREEN (NTSC)” flashes on both screens and both pictures’ are back to normal. Small quirk…definitely NOT a show stopper. It’s still a great buy in our opinion, worth every penny. An added bonus…when the granddaughter out grows these gadgets, we can still use them as independent portable DVD players around the house.

UPDATE 9/21/2012: In August of 2012, one month after warranty expiration, one of the players (the one in the car most frequently used), started to fail. It would display “bad disc” on all DVDs we tried to play. Obviously, the DVDs were fine and played without flaw on other playback devices. Today, this player is completely dead. I tried to buy a single player replacement thru Philips…that was a deadend. I don’t recommend product lines that only last a year. Especially if they have no replacement resolution (even at my cost). Now I have to buy another portable player for the car for my granddaughter’s entertainment but it will not be a Philips…I’m done with that brand. I’m reducing my rating to three stars.
