Top Positive Review

I wanted a portable dvd player largely for keeping my 3 year old occupied on long car trips and plane rides. I finally decided on the Panasonic L-S86 portable dvd player. I got it for $100 but it’s now up to $169. I am not sure if I’ll use this as often on car trips until my son is a little older since the cover for the dvd itself seems a bit delicate. Also, the buttons are far too tempting and easy to press and thus my son tends to turn things on and off if left to his own devices. This was easy to remedy on a plane but would be harder if we’re in a car.

The pros:

Nice large screen

Good resolution on playback, even when in moonlight mode (which is a dimmer screen view to conserve battery power)

Good sound

Nice long battery life. I was able to get 5 hours play back time when using the daylight function. I haven’t tested how long on the moonlight function but it must be longer than that.

The screen moves easily and can sit flat or raised up for easy viewing in different situations

The cons:

The buttons aren’t really placed in an intuitive fashion so it’s hard to find what you are looking for at first

The buttons are all over the machine so it’s hard to pick up the dvd player without hitting one

If you inadvertently stop the dvd (for example, by hitting the wrong button), the dvd starts all over, it doesn’t play back from the last location

You can only skip forward and go back by chapters–there’s no way to “rewind” or “fast forward” (for lack of better phrases) through the dvd scenes to get to the place you’d like within a chapter

The dvd cover seems very delicate and needs to be handled gently

There’s no finger hole place to get a dvd out of the machine. I have small fingers so I can slide my finger into a small space and pull it out but I think people with larger hands might have a problem easily getting dvds out.

Overall, this is a pretty good player and I’m happy with it. For the somewhat infrequent times that I’ll be using it, I don’t think I would’ve paid $169 for it but it was a great $100 investment. As a younger child’s portable dvd player it may not be the best but it’ll certainly do the job. Plus, it’s easy to use and the long battery life and the car charger make it easy for adults and older children to use anywhere.

As an aside, I got my son some Califone animal headphones which helped reduce the plane noise. He loves the panda bear design and seemed to enjoy wearing them to watch the player. I also picked up a neoprene sleeve for a 10″ computer and it worked great for storing/carrying the player.

Top Critical Review

When I purchased this, my main purpose was because it claimed to have 13 hours of battery life. It actually has about 5 or 6. One main problem I have with it is the location of the buttons. Any time I try to adjust it, carry it, or hold it I end up pushing buttons without meaning to. This obviously can get very annoying. The picture quality is fine. The audio is better with headphones, but it uses more battery. A nice feature is that it comes with all the adapters you might want or need.
