The JVC VHS/DVD player is still a necessity- we still do have VHS and can get them cheaply- quality is less reliable than a DVD but great for those who have an old collection in their homes. The player runs smoothly, has well-made components, and delivers at optimum. I like to record things on VHS tapes TV as DVD player usually do not have recording capacity. I had been hunting for a great price, and at $70, this was it- great quality, great price, and great reliability. I have owned JVC electronic items and they are built to last. I am hoping that this will be the last VHS player that I will own. I am pretty sure even when VHS goes entirely out, I will be using the DVD component.

THe only things is that the unit is bulky so you need more shelf space, but then, VHS tapes are big and bulky so there is not much choice there. Overall, I think this is the best buy.

the unit as received seems decent. operating the VCR reveals a lot to be wanting. the accepting and reading of the tape is not stellar fast, nor is it mechanically smooth or relatively quiet. Remote is avg. the biggest disappointment is in the inputs and the DVD format support. No coax input. just mere disc component YBR output and some share VCR/DVD composite outputs.
playing a disc like video VCD or the likes will not be recognized, after what appears to be forever media-read process. Only the very official DVD format will be decoded or played and, yet it would take some time for even that to be recognized. Response to the remote is not stellar, and playing back a VHS or rewinding it yields clunky response that usually does not exist on Sony SLV combo models. Do yourself a favor: try to search where to get a decent used Sony models first before spending $99 on this. I keep this as a backup. I own quite a few Sony already.
