Top Positive Review

I have a longer driveway with a steep hill and a 90 degree corner. We often had visitors and deliveryman showing up on our doorstep without warning. I needed something to give us some warning that could reach up the hill, around a corner, through a garage and into the house.

While this sensor may be a bit more expensive than others, the ease of installation and its performance justify the extra cost. I was able to install this quickly and easily (95%of my time was spent on setting a post to mount it on, but even with the post digging and setting, the whole thing took less than 40 minutes).

The unit comes set up and ready to go. Install batteries, mount to a post or tree and you’re done. You have a choice of 32 chimes to choose from and changing chimes, sensitivity and other settings is easy to accomplished. The directions are easy to follow, straightforward, and were obviously written by someone who speaks English. The diagrams are accurate, detailed and useful. I didn’t need any assistance from their technical support, but it was good to see they do their own tech support from Seattle.

Once installed, all I had to do was plug in the inside receiver (it has batteries too, if you don’t want to plug it in) and it was functioning perfectly. I have no problems with reception, despite the distance from the house (several hundred feet) the fact that it is at the bottom of a steep hill and the signal has to pass through our garage to get to the house. It works perfectly.

Now we have ample warning of vehicles or people coming up our driveway. I think I may buy another sensor and link it to this receiver so I can have a different chime when someone actually comes onto the front porch.

All-in-all, I’m very satisfied with our purchase and highly recommend this to friends, family and neighbors.

Top Critical Review

I strongly advise that you do not buy this product. I read the reviews and ordered it in spite of the high price expecting a top quality alarm that could replace my $50 system that failed after a year of use. WRONG! The actual maximum range between sensor and receiver for this system was about 400′ over the same path conditions that he cheap unit could cover at 800′. There were trees and brush in the path between the sensor and receiver, but nothing unusual. I’m sure I set it up correctly. The instructions were good, and I’m a former TV broadcast engineer and I hold the highest class amateur radio license the FCC issues. In other words, I know what I’m doing.

Its quite clear why his system doesn’t perform. First, it is operating in the same 900 MHz frequency band that is used for very short range devices like garage door openers. 900 MHz signals are strongly absorbed by vegetation like you would encounter in most practical applications of this system. At 900 MHz and using the maximum power allowed by the FCC, you would need a perfectly clear line-of-sight path between the sensor and receiver AND decent antennas on both for reliable performance. Alas, this system relies on a bit of wire folded to fit inside the plastic case in lieu of a proper antenna. The lack of proper antennas is the primary reason this system could not match the 800′ range of my $50 system, which had good antennas on both the sensor and receiver. There is no provision for adding good antennas, a major deficiency.

I returned this system and received a prompt refund, so you don’t need to fear trying it if you only need a 300′ coverage radius and you really need to operate tens of sensors, each with a unique alarm. Otherwise, less expensive alternatives will likely be much more cost effective.

Customer Questions & Answers

Can two bases work together on the same sensors? I??m wanting to put a base downstairs and one upstairs of my home to alert me when someone is visiting
Answer: Yes two base units can be used to monitor a sensor. I have one base upstairs and one in basement and they work great.

How far will the beam travel to detect motion?
Answer: There are four dip switch sensitivity settings: 40′, 26′, 23′, and 13′.

how do you deal with the sensitvity issues ie human intruders vs animals, birds, car traffic
Answer: It will activate if a large enough animal walks by but I would guess that would occur with any of these devices. Mine is placed at least 1/4 mile down a heavily wooded driveway & works exactly as I anticipated.

What can you do with the wifi?
Answer: It is a wireless item. Has nothing to do with internet wifi or other wifi devices. Freestanding driveway alarm that is pretty reliable.

Is there any option to get transmitters supporting Z-wave protocol? Or to connect the receiver to a Z-wave siren?
Answer:

Your Guardline Driveway Alarm can trigger external devices whenever a signal is received on your receiver. You can use the 12v relay feature to activate powered or unpowered 12v external devices such as strobes or sirens. You can even use the 12v relay to tie your Guardline Driveway Alarm into an existing home alarm sy??
