An Epic Story: Uncover the mystery behind the fall of the Uldein Empire by traversing through the mercenary’s storyline, and exploring each of four unique faction stories.

Top Positive Review

I recently picked up The Grand Kingdom for PS Vita. And I will be the first to admit it has been an amazing experience so far. The premise of leading your own merry band of misfit mercenaries is an appealing one. The developers of the game managed not only to provide a fun experience but also created a challenging game that offers a full single player aspect as well as a multiplayer aspect. The single campaign begins off by running you through a quick tutorial that briefly introduces you to the controls of the game, however the game does require a bit of a trail and error on the users part to really figure out what everything does. For me that is one of the more adoring features of The Grand Kingdom. In the online mode you can either choose to take part in wars between the four dulling nations or you can simple send your online avatar out into the wilds so to speak. I would recommend this game for fans of strategy games.

Top Critical Review

I wouldn’t call it strategy, and I wouldn’t call it an rpg.

This is a very reasonable bit of casual fun, but looking back, 80 hours in, this one’s a bit of an oddball.

The story campaign is twelve maps which were kind of annoying with some sad bits of writing thrown in. The old fire emblem games on the ds would look like a masterpiece compared to the storytelling in grand kingdom. Or, put another way, I didn’t start story mission 2 until I was level 99 and 70 hours in. This is not the witcher, or dragon age, or persona. Ogre tactics has like 100x the story and 10x the strategy compared to this.

Online games I never play, but this part of gk was entirely fine. It felt like single player. Just another way to grind. All the enemies were AI. Not a single interaction with another human being, just digital copies of their parties as war fodder. I just got on the wi-fi and did a couple missions a day. Exp and loot seems to be more generous in the online mode, made leveling much faster. I went online simply to power level and a pick up scrolls.

The entire gameplay loop is building up units and building up parties. That’s pretty much the entire game, as I played it, every day for the last six weeks. Hit the level cap, got the high level weapons, and now I’ve hit the wall of diminishing returns. Other people I’m sure are playing this in their own unique way, there’s quite a bit of freedom to play as you see fit. But I was pretty over-leveled my entire experience, it didn’t feel like there was any strategy whatsoever. That said, I was never bored. The urge to grind and level and repeat… hit the pleasure centers the way addiction is supposed to hit.My best girl Cupcakes is pure s rank everywhere that counts.I went with the all female fighting force. Hammer girl got it done.

The art has quite a few cute little animations, a little exploitation and objectification, and it feels good, busting skulls and pounding villains into the ground. Personally I would have preferred about 10x the fan service. Vanillaware this is not. Senran Kagura tactics I would buy up like crack on the playground. Grand kingdom is far more generic in its art that I expected, and I even spent quite a bit of time on the japanese website before I put money down on this. It just, overall, has a lot less character than it should. It’s kind of like mobile game knockoff in the art department.

No huge regrets. I got my money’s worth. Thanks to amazon prime’s 20% off, which has me buying more games at launch than I otherwise would.

3 stars, 7/10, to put a numerical score on this feel a little arbitrary. Slightly underwhelming, but very much a net positive.

If grand kingdom was fast food, it wouldn’t be my favorite. I don’t love it or crave it. But it was a fine snack during the summer gaming drought.

Customer Questions & Answers

can this game be played offline?
Answer: you can play it offline but you don’t get to participate in the war so you don’t gain favor with the 4 kingdoms. There is a story mode that I have been playing through without any interaction with the 4 kingdoms. I have not yet beat the game so I am unsure how necessary the the interaction is needed.

Is this supposed to come with a manual? I like flipping through one before playing but my purchase did not include one
Answer: No, none of the Vita games come with a physical paper manual. You can access the manual in a digital format through the splash screen before starting the game. PS4 games are not coming with manuals neither.

Does the Vita version run at 60fps like the PS4 version?
Answer: I believe so, there are no framerate drops so it runs smoothly. Great game!

Is this in English or Japanese?
Answer: English release was on June 21st, 2016. My copy is in English.
